Over Water is a ten episode drama series by Pael Baeten Gronda and Tom Lenaerts. It tells the story of has-been TV personality John Beckers. Trying to lay off his addiction to booze and gambling he spirals down a new world of crime, becoming a major cocaine trafficker in an underworld that necessitates anonymity.
A new life for John Beckers
John Beckers used to be somebody. By the end of the nineties, he rose to fame as a glorious television host, but by now he is being mocked. He was a proud dad, but his two children and his wife lost faith in him. He had everything, wanted even more, and ended up with nothing.
After hitting the bottom hard, John decided to look for help. Now he has been going to rehab, has been offered a new job in the Antwerp port by his father-in-law, and one last time his family has welcomed him at home with arms wide open. Lurking around the corner of his new job and environment is an unknown new beginning, something surprising that nobody could have expected. His new life will take place far from the spotlight, but precisely in the shadow of the ruling crime in the port. None of which John is aware on his first day at work, arriving clean and prepared.
Over Water is about the fatal weakness of man, gradually consuming him and making him human at the same time. It’s a series about a man with good intentions. A paterfamilias who tried to do good for once, and didn’t mean for it to go wrong. It’s a story about a man who tries to make the best of it while life chases him down. The bigger his lies, the more brutal the cover-up and the more dangerous the game gets.
The port of Antwerp
The universal setting of Over Water is the international port of Antwerp, a gateway to a world in which every container coming in might be the start of a new story. Against the backdrop of this enormous universe the characters seem nothing but small, fragile and struggling beings.
